Join us on Saturday, February 28 at 10:00AM on Zoom or in Mattson Ballroom at Eagles #34 (2507 E 25th St, Minneapolis, MN 55406). Check-in on Saturday begins at 9:30AM, with the meeting kickoff at 10:00AM. Please register for the method you plan on using to attend on Saturday; this allows us to plan accordingly.

Every February, Twin Cities DSA gathers for our annual convention where we elect chapter leadership, consider resolutions and bylaws proposals, and set priorities to determine a path forward together for socialist organizing in the coming year. This year will also include chapter platform proposals.

Any proposals that we do not get to on Saturday, February 28 will be considered at the next General Meeting. Proposal authors who feel their item can be considered at that time instead should indicate so in the Steering Committee Slack channel.

Accessibility and Childcare

Eagles 34 is ADA accessible and is located on Metro Transit Routes 9 and 7 via the Blue Line and the B Line. Our meeting room allows up to 210 people in conference seating.

Childcare will be provided in a separate room at Eagles #34, the Buechner Room, where we can offer childcare for up to 20 children. Paper Moon Childcare Cooperative will be our professional childcare provider for convention. You must RSVP in order to bring your children to the meeting. Paper Moon requires information on the number of children they will be providing care for, their ages, accessibility needs, and any food allergies. We must provide this information to Paper Moon by February 14th, per their policy, in order for them to adequately prepare to provide childcare.

Need a ride? Let us know on the in-person registration form and we’ll connect you to a rideshare volunteer.

How to Help Out

It takes a ton of work to pull off an event like this, and we need all hands on deck. There are many ways to help out, such as hybrid technology support, marshaling, and rideshare. Please RSVP and answer the volunteer questions if you can help out!

Chapter Priorities, Resolutions, Bylaws Amendments, and Platform Amendments

On February 28th, our chapter will hold our annual convention where we will:

To that end, there are a number of upcoming deadlines for submission of various proposals and amendments. Because our chapter’s Contingency Plan is active, and leadership is responding to real-time developments in on-the-ground organizing conditions, the current convention timeline may be updated. However, at this time, the plan is to proceed with our scheduled convention, with submissions for agenda set according to the following timeline.

January 25th: Deadline for submission of Priority Campaign Proposals
January 28th: Deadline for submission of Resolutions, Bylaws, and Platform Amendments
January 29th: Signature collections begin. To be considered at convention submissions must meet the following signature thresholds:

  • Resolutions: 3% (65 member signatures)
  • Bylaw Amendments 3% (65 member signatures)
  • Priority Campaigns 5% (108 member signatures)
  • Platform Amendments 3% (65 member signatures)

Definitions:

  • A resolution is used to formalize an operational process, make a strategic decision, or declare a political position. Resolutions must not violate the bylaws and require a majority of the vote in order to be adopted by the chapter.
  • A bylaw amendment is a change to the structure and rules that govern our chapter. Bylaw amendments require 2/3 of the vote in order to be adopted by the chapter.
  • A priority is a project or campaign that the chapter intends to take on and prioritize at the chapter level for the coming year. Priorities must not violate the bylaws and require a majority of the vote in order to be adopted by the chapter.
  • A platform amendment is a change to the chapter platform draft, which is being proposed by the Platform Committee under mandate from last convention. These require a majority of the vote in order to be accepted as amendments to the platform proposal. The final, amended platform will also require a majority vote in order to be adopted by the chapter.

Resolution, bylaw, chapter priority, and platform amendments will not be accepted on the floor at convention.

You can read our current bylaws here. Any member can submit a resolution, bylaw amendment, priority proposal, or platform amendment for consideration. We encourage members to share debate and discuss proposed items on the #convention-discussion channel on Slack. (Not on slack? Submit tcdsa.org/slack.)

Voting & Eligibility

You can attend convention regardless of membership status. To vote on leadership, amendments, and resolutions, or to run for leadership, you’ll need to be a member. Members will be sent an email on February 18 with your member status, or email operations@twincitiesdsa.org.

To join or renew your membership, go to dsausa.org/join. To learn how to join or renew without paying member dues, see the dues waiver page here.

Voting on platform amendments will occur at the convention by members attending in person or Zoom. We will use OpaVote to vote asynchronously on leadership positions, bylaws, resolutions, chapter priorities, and the final amended platform. OpaVote ballots will be sent out in the days after convention open, and will be open for 4 days in total.
