Twin Cities DSA Little Red Letter #84: Looking Back, Looking Forward

This week marks two years since the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department. As socialists and Twin Cities residents, we’re painfully aware of how little has changed in the two years since we took to the streets. What little was secured by the movement in convictions and promises of reform has been overshadowed by the scrambling of both Republicans and the vast majority of Democrats to show that their commitment to a racist and brutal system of policing is unconditional at the first sign of hand-wringing over sensationalist crime stories. We invite you to read in the recent statement published by the national Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus and take a moment this week to reflect on how we can carry our demands for justice, for abolition, and for black lives into our organizing in the months ahead.   On a brighter note, it was a joy to see so many comrades out at Grilling (With) Your Electeds on Friday. Over 40 comrades were able to make it out to hear from Councilmembers Chughtai, Chavez, and Wonsley Worlobah and enjoy a beautiful Spring day. The results of our brainstorming activities at the May general meeting showed that many of us are wanting more socials and opportunities to connect in person. We’ll be hoping to provide many more chances for it this summer, and look forward to you joining us!

• Labor Branch Union Jobs Fair – Thursday 6/9, 6:30pm Zoom Link
There’s a lot going on in the labor movement right now: a historic strike by Minneapolis educators, Starbucks organizing, Amazon, a huge UPS contract and lots more. We need socialists to be right in the middle of it.   We’ll have brief presentations by DSA members who are already employed in union jobs or organizing drives about what the political opportunities are where they work. They’ll also describe what kind of qualifications you will need to get hired.   If you are fired up about the prospect of being part of this historic upsurge in working class struggle or just curious and thinking about switching jobs, please join us!
